Chapter 4
Tips for your branding journey
Building a brand is a serious commitment — but it’s one that’s worth it.
When you have a vision that inspires your team, and guidelines that help you execute on it, your brand can feel less like a set of guidelines and more like a force of nature.
That said, it’s a big investment in time and energy. It can also be a little scary to tackle the project.
If you’re just starting, here are some tips:
Take time to learn about brand
If you want your branding project to be successful, you should understand some of the theory. Some recommended reading:
Prioritise
The goal of branding is to convey a message. Whether it’s visually or verbally, you have to prioritise and make sure there is a clear hierarchy. Give your messages an order of operations, and focus on the single most important takeaway first.
Stay consistent above all else
When it comes to branding, showing up with the same style over and over again is how to win. Consistency brings recognition, and recognition builds reputation. Making lots of small changes get out of control. The scattergun effect to see what sticks doesn’t help anyone.
Focus on building skills, not getting deliverables
If you want your brand to be maintainable, your entire team in-house needs to be bought into the process. Focus on working with agencies that will set you up for success after the contract is over — which often looks like great documentation, training, and continued support. Remember, brand is something your team should feel, not just do. You have to make sure your team can incorporate it into every area of the business.
Remember your brand is about the process, not the end product.
Brand is your reputation, and marketing is how you manage it. The project is never “over” — just iterated upon continuously. When you have rock-solid foundations, it becomes easier to make changes over time.
